    COVER STORY

    Playing to Win
Outlets and gaming can be a sure bet when all the factors, especially proximity and flow, add up. VRN looks at the new surge of outlet centers and casinos inching ever closer to one another in upcoming projects and why this is becoming a trend. Could it be that the profiles of gaming enthusiasts and outlet shoppers are almost identical?

    FEATURED COVERAGE

    Arizona heats up
After a long dry spell, outlet development in Arizona is heating up with a fistful of new projects clustered around Phoenix. Outlet developers Tanger Factory Outlet Centers and AWE Talisman hook up with traditional developers in the market, while Simon Property Group plans a solo project. All are looking at 2013 openings, and at least two projects have casino connections.

    Consumer Snapshots
Consumer research conducted by ICSC and Goldman Sachs shows that cross-shopping is today’s norm – 60 percent of outlet shoppers do it; despite the buzz, social media can turn negative, especially when customer reviews pan a product; and the affluent, who are confident and plan to keep spending, might have all the latest social media tools but only 12 percent say they ever use them.

    Outlets Asia Conference
ICSC is launching the first conference in Asia exclusively for the outlet sector on July 28 and 29 at the Shangri-La Hotel Suzhou. The focus of the 1 ˝-day conference will focus on brands, Asian preferences, economic trends, investors and planning policies.

    Up Front
Tanger Factory Outlet Centers celebrates 30 years in the outlet business with a buying, building strategy that includes acquisitions in Maryland, Ohio and New Jersey, plus new-construction projects in Arizona, Texas, Washington, D.C. and Canada; Simon Property Group and Calloway REIT form a JV to develop at least one outlet center in Canada, in the Toronto market, within one Interstate exit of a previously announced outlet project.

    Development Briefs
Janet Bedin and David Grossman have joined AWE Talisman to lease the developer’s planned 550,000-sf Fashion Outlets of Chicago in Rosemont, Ill. Craig Realty Group has hired Traci Markel and Simone O’Connor for its marketing team at Citadel Outlets in Los Angeles; outlet industry consultancy EWB Development recently added two to its staff: Lavinia Sidawy and Luke Porto. In leasing activity, Tanger has retenanted more than 135,000 sf of former Liz Claiborne space; Craig Realty Group has added more than 20,000 sf of new leases; Mills continues to bump up outlet leasing at its megamalls; and Simon Property Group continues to sign up new tenants at its 61 outlet centers, especially those in the South and Southwest.
